چکیده
SPIRE, the Spectral and Photometric Imaging Receiver, is one of three instruments to fly on ESA's Herschel Space Observatory. It contains a three-band imaging photometer operating at 250, 360 and 520 µm, and an imaging Fourier Transform Spectrometer (FTS) covering 200-670 µm. It will be used for many extragalactic science programmes, a number of which will be implemented as Herschel Key Projects. The SPIRE consortium's Guaranteed Time programme will devote more than 1000 hours to Key Projects covering the high-z universe and local galaxies. It is also expected that substantial amounts of Herschel Open Time will be used for further extragalactic investigations. The high-z part of the SPIRE GT programme will focus on blank-field surveys with a range of depths and areas optimised to sample the luminosity-redshift plane and characterise the bolometric luminosity density of the universe at high z. Fields will be selected that are well covered at other wavelengths to facilitate source identifications and enable detailed studies of the redshifts, spectral energy distributions, and infrared properties of detected galaxies. The local galaxies programme will include a detailed spectral and photometric study of a sample of well resolved nearby galaxies, a survey of more than 300 local galaxies designed to provide a statistical survey of dust in the nearby universe, and a study of the ISM in low-metallicity environments, bridging the gap between the local universe and primordial galaxies.

Ultra Luminous Infra-Red Galaxies (ULIRGs) – gas-rich mergers harboring the most extreme star-forming conditions encountered in the local Universe – are thought to re-enact the galaxy formation processes we are only barely able to glimpse in the distant Universe. Combining new single-dish molecular line observations of 12 CO, 13 CO, HCO + , HCN, and CS towards the two ULIRGs Arp 220 and NGC 624...
متن کاملThe Herschel Galaxy Reference Survey
In order to study the dust properties of different galaxies in the nearby Universe, the SPIRE extragalactic group selected a volume limited (15< D <25 Mpc), complete sample of 313 galaxies spanning the whole range in morphological type (from ellipticals to late-type spirals) and luminosity (8.5 < log LH < 12 LH⊙, -22 < MB < -16) extracted from 2MASS, to be observed in guaranteed time with Hersc...

Unexpected in the AGN unified scheme, there exists a population of broad-line z∼2 QSOs which have heavily absorbed X-ray spectra. These objects constitute ∼10% of the population at luminosities and redshifts characteristic of the main producers of QSO luminosity in the Universe. Our follow up observations in the submm show that these QSOs are often embedded in ultraluminous starburst galaxies, ...
متن کاملHerschel-ATLAS: Extragalactic number counts from 250 to 500 microns*
Aims. The Herschel-ATLAS survey (H-ATLAS) will be the largest area survey to be undertaken by the Herschel Space Observatory. It will cover 550 sq. deg. of extragalactic sky at wavelengths of 100, 160, 250, 350 and 500 μm when completed, reaching flux limits (5σ) from 32 to 145 mJy. We here present galaxy number counts obtained for SPIRE observations of the first ∼14 sq. deg. observed at 250, 3...
متن کاملSpitzer Imaging of Strongly Lensed Herschel-selected Dusty Star-forming Galaxies
We present the rest-frame optical spectral energy distribution (SED) and stellar masses of six Herschel-selected gravitationally lensed dusty, star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) at 1< z< 3. These galaxies were first identified with Herschel/SPIRE imaging data from the Herschel Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey (H-ATLAS) and the Herschel Multi-tiered Extragalactic Survey (HerMES). The targets...
